Marriott Caught Blocking WiFi

December 19, 2014Posted by csandy

A stable broadband connection is an essential component of a successful live stream.  When you’re on the road, access to broadband services can be limited.  Some places don’t have many broadband options.  Other places have no options at all and require you to bring your own Internet services such a satellite, or BGAN.

When in conference or hotel facilities your broadband options are often dictated by the venue or their preferred contractor.  Often the service offered is very expensive.  So to get around these high fees many business people and conference attendees bring their own Internet access device, whether it be a MiFi or access point, or simply the built in WiFi in your smart phone.

Well, you can imagine the ire of one patron at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN who tried to use his personal hotspot to get onto the Internet only to find that the hotel was actively blocking WiFi.  Everyone’s WiFi but their own.  And it wasn’t a secret.  Taking a look at this currently published Internet services contract at a Gaylord property in Florida:

Here’s an excerpt:

Wireless Specific (802.11a,b,g): The Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center has deployed an 802.11a/b/g wireless management system in its

meeting facility. This management system assists Gaylord Palms IT representatives with the delivery of flawless high speed internet access. The use

of any unsecured wireless access point or any other device that broadcasts open internet access is strictly prohibited. At no time will an exhibitor or

customer power up any wireless device not provided by Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center without prior authorization. To be considered for

authorization to use an 802.11a/b/g/n wireless device, please contact the Gaylord Palms IT department via e-mail to dcrawford@GaylordHotels.com

and provide your access point SSID and the total number of devices you plan on connecting to your access point. Failure to do so will result in

automatic suppression of your access point rendering your wireless devices incapable of communications.

My emphasis added.  You can find the full contract here:

Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center Electrical/Utility …

I’m thinking they may want to change their policy considering failure to do so got a little expensive for their  Nashville counterpart: http://boxtoprentals.com/2014/10/fcc-fines-marriott-600000-blocking-wifi/  .

Hopefully the hotel industry will get the message and those of us who rely on Internet connections on the road can be free of the tyranny of exorbitant Interne fees and paying for a service we may already have in our pocket.
